Press Release Detail:
Thorlabs Experiments with Geämi™ Paper in Eco-Friendly Packaging
Newton, NJ – December 30, 2009.
As part of our green initiative, Thorlabs, a leading manufacturer of equipment for the photonic industry, has been actively seeking ways to minimize packaging waste. To that end, we are experimenting with Geämi™ packaging to protect some of our mechanical components. Geämi, a word that combines Greek (ge) and Latin (ami) roots and literally means “earth friend,” is the most environmentally friendly protective packaging currently available. This complete paper-based, 100% recyclable and compostable packaging material provides an effective alternative to oil-based products such as bubble wrap and peanuts.
“Thorlabs is committed to finding sustainable protective packaging solutions that meet our customers’ expectations,” says Alex Cable, founder and CEO of Thorlabs. “As we work our way through our large inventory of 20,000 products with diverse packaging needs, we ask that our customers share with us their thoughts on what works and what doesn’t.”
Products currently packaged with Geämi paper will be labeled with a green sticker on the box. Thoughts and feedback concerning our green efforts are always welcome:
