The XR25X(/M) 25 mm Translation Stage is offered without an actuator or actuator mounting kit for users looking to build a custom stage with their choice of motorized (or manual) actuator. First, choose between imperial and metric mounting threads, as noted in Table 1.1. Then, choose between a side- or end-mounting kit for the actuator. Lastly, select an actuator; stepper motor actuators, a DC servo motor actuator, and a piezo inertia actuator are available. Accessories are also available for additional mounting flexibility, including vertical stage mounting.
The XR25X stage provides 25 mm of linear translation with less than 150 µrad of deviation per axis in pitch and yaw over the full travel range. It uses crossed-roller bearings to support precision motion and high load capacities. The top and bottom plates are machined from cast tool and jig aluminum for minimal internal stress and improved stability. The stage position can be locked into place via a lock plate.
The top and bottom of the stage feature quick connect dovetails (as shown in Figure 1.2) that allow for the construction of multi-axis systems without the need for additional hardware. Refer to Video 1.4 to see how multi-axis systems can be quickly constructed using this design. The 3" dovetails on the XR25X series stages are also directly compatible with the dovetails on our XR50 translation stages, XRV1 vertical translation stage, and XRR1 rotation stage. The base of the stage also features 1/4" (M6) slots for direct breadboard mounting.
Video 1.4 Quickly Construct Multi-Axis Stages
The XR25X(/M) stage features 3" dovetails on the top and bottom plate that allow for quick construction of multi-axis systems. There are no dowel pins to install or screws that need to be inserted through the top plate, which means that mounted components do not need to be removed from the top stage before constructing an XY configuration. In addition, the top stage can be locked at any location along the dovetail, allowing for coarse positioning.
Additional functionality is provided by a complete line of 3" dovetail accessories that include multi-axis assembly kits, rail carriers, rotation adapters, rails, and stage positioners. These accessories are compatible with all stages that have an integrated 3" dovetail. An adapter plate is also available for mounting compact, 2" dovetail stages onto full-size, 3" dovetail stages. We also offer the ENCXR25 position encoder for use with actuators that lack the functionality, such as the PIA25 Piezo Inertia Actuator, which is designed for set-and-hold applications that require high-resolution relative positioning. For details on our full line of quick-connect stages and accessories, including XR25 series stages pre-configured with manual micrometers and the compact XRN25X modular motorized stage, see the Quick-Connect Stages tab above.

Motorized Linear Translation Stages
Thorlabs' motorized linear translation stages are offered in a range of maximum travel distances, from a stage with 20 µm of piezo translation to our 600 mm direct drive stage. Many of these stages can be assembled in multi-axis configurations, providing XY or XYZ translation. For fiber coupling applications, please see our multi-axis stages, which offer finer adjustment than our standard motorized translation stages. In addition to motorized linear translation stages, we offer motorized rotation stages and goniometers. We also offer manual translation stages.
Piezo Stages
These stages incorporate piezoelectric elements in a variety of drive mechanisms. ORIC® stages incorporate piezo inertia drives that use "stick-slip" friction properties to obtain extended travel ranges. Our modular, quick-connect XRN25X and XR25X translation stages can be driven by the PIA25 piezo inertia actuator which operates using the same principle. Our Nanoflex™ translation stages use standard piezo chips along with manual actuators. Elliptec® stages use resonant piezo motors to push and pull the moving platform through resonant elliptical motion. Our LPS710E z-axis stage features a mechanically amplified piezo design and includes a matched controller.

Direct Drive Stages
These low-profile stages feature integrated brushless DC servo motors for high speed translation with zero backlash. When no power is applied, the platforms of these stages have very little inertia and are virtually free running. Hence these stages may not be suitable for applications where the stage's platform needs to remain in a set position when the power is off. We do not recommend mounting these stages vertically.

The XR25-C1 and XR25-C2 actuator mounting kits enable side- and end-mounting of an actuator, respectively, on an XR25 (or XR50) series stage. See Video G2.1 for details on the mount and actuator installation steps.
Note: Before removing an installed actuator, lock the stage by tightening the button head cap screw in the groove in the steel locking plate using a 5/64" (2 mm) hex key.
Side Mounting an Actuator
To side mount an actuator, as shown here, the locking plate may need to be removed or swapped to the opposite side of the stage. When doing so, the moving world must be manually held in place relative to the base of the stage to avoid the internal spring quickly retracting and damaging the mechanism.

Figure G4.3 Z-Axis Stage Constructed Using the XR25-XZ Assembly Kit and
the XR25-B1 Base Plate (Sold Below)
- Kits Consist of Angle Bracket and Z-Axis Mounting Plate
- Supports X, Z, XZ, YZ, or XYZ Configurations
- Compatible with 3" Mating Dovetail Stages
- Included Dovetail Clamp Screw has a Maximum Torque of 15 in•lbs
Thorlabs offers two assembly kits used to mount two XR25 or XR50 series stages perpendicular to each other. The XR25-XZ(/M) Assembly Kit contains a mounting plate and an angle bracket that mounts the surface of the Z-axis platform in-line to the direction of travel (XZ configuration). The XR25-YZ(/M) Assembly Kit contains a mounting plate and an angle bracket that mounts the surface of the Z-axis platform perpendicular to the direction of travel (YZ configuration). Take care during assembly to ensure no collisions with the Z-axis stage occur during full downward extension.
Both configurations require purchasing two XR25 and/or XR50 series stages in any combination as well as either assembly kit. The female dovetail on one arm of the angle bracket attaches to the male dovetail on the tapped platform of the X- or Y-axis stage, and then the male dovetail of the tapped platform of the Z-axis stage is mated to the other arm of the angle bracket. The tapped mounting plate provided with the XR25-XZ and the XR25-YZ is mounted to the underside of the Z-axis stage by attaching the male dovetail of the plate to the female dovetail on the stage, as shown in Figures G4.1 and G4.2. Mating the Z-axis stage this way ensures that the actuator is countering forces from both gravity and the internal spring.
The tapped mounting plate included in each assembly kit contains the same 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) tapped hole pattern as the top plate of the stages. Additionally, it offers two rear-located #8 (M4) counterbores for mounting optomechanical components with tapped 8-32 (M4) mounting holes directly to the mounting surface. Note that the component must be mounted with the 8-32 (M4) cap screw before the mounting plate is secured to the stage.
Z-Axis Stage Configuration
For situations where only a Z-axis translation stage is needed, either the XR25-XZ(/M) or the XR25-YZ(/M) angle bracket can be secured directly to the XR25-B1(/M) base plate (sold below), as shown in Figure G4.3.
X-Axis Stage Configuration
In addition to a Z-axis stage configuration, the XR25-XZ(/M) can be used for situations where the X-axis translation stage needs to be mounted vertically. The X-axis stage needs to be secured to the XR25-XZ(/M) angle bracket, and the angle bracket secured directly to the XR25-B1(/M) base plate (sold below).
XYZ Configurations
In order to construct an XYZ configuration, first connect two stages together to create an XY stage. Then, the XR25-YZ(/M) assembly kit can be used to add the Z-axis. An XYZ configuration can also be constructed using the XR25-XZ(/M) assembly kit, which functions the same as an XYZ configuration constructed using the XR25-YZ(/M) kit, with only the X-axis and Y-axis stages switched. An XYZ configuration using the XR25-XZ assembly kit is shown in Figure G4.4.

- XRN-A1 Adapter Enables Perpendicular Mounting of 2" Dovetail Components onto 3" Dovetail Components
- XRN-A2 Adapter Enables Parallel Mounting of 2" Dovetail Components onto 3" Dovetail Components
- XR25-A2 Adapter Enables Parallel Mounting of 3" Dovetail Components
- Adapters Add 0.275" (7.0 mm) to the Overall Stacked Height of Components
These adapters provide additional mounting options for our quick-connect, crossed-roller bearing stages, as illustrated in the photos below. The XRN-A1 adapter enables perpendicular mounting of components with a female 2" dovetail to components with a male 3" dovetail while the XRN-A2 adapter enables parallel mounting of the same. The XR25-A2 adapter enables parallel mounting of two components with 3" dovetails. The mounting configuration in Figure G5.2 allows translation along a rail to be parallel to the direction of translation of a mounted stage.
To assemble, first loosen the dovetail locking screw on the end of the top stage or accessory. Position the adapter on the bottom stage or rail, as illustrated in Figures G5.1 and G5.2, then align the top component on the adapter. Lastly, tighten the dovetail locking screw (maximum torque: 15 in•lbs) on the end of the top component until the entire assembly is secure. Please note that the deep-set screws in the sides of the adapter are not user adjustable.

- Allows for Coarse Rotational or Translational Alignment of Stages with Table Hole Matrix
- Orthogonal Male Dovetails for Two Stage Mounting Orientations
- Compatible with 3" Mating Dovetail Stages
The XR25-B1(/M) Base Plate provides an additional table mounting option for our XR25 and XR50 series translation stages. The base plate features two orthogonal male dovetails that allow for two mounting orientations of an XR25 or XR50 series stage. A center Ø1/4" (M6) counterbored hole and two radial counterbored slots allow for coarse angular adjustment with respect to the table's 1/4"-20 (M6 x 1.0) hole matrix. For situations where the stage is oriented with the table's hole matrix, two 2.2" (55.9 mm) long 1/4" (M6) counterbored slots on the edge of the base plate allow for coarse translation adjustment along the hole matrix before the base is secured to the table.
Z-Axis Stage Configuration
For situations where only a Z-axis translation stage is needed, either the XR25-XZ(/M) or the XR25-YZ(/M) angle bracket (sold above) can be secured directly to the base plate.
X-Axis Stage Configuration
In addition to a Z-axis stage configuration, the XR25-XZ(/M) angle bracket (sold above) can be used for situations where the X-axis translation stage needs to be mounted vertically. The XR25-XZ(/M) angle
bracket can be secured directly to the XR25-B1(/M) base plate.
Video G6.1 This animation shows how the XR25-B1 base plate can be used for alignment of the stage.
